Is youth skill acquisition or Skills-Based Education important? how does it affect the employment rate among Nigerian youths?

This article has important points that will help not just to get employed, but to be in high demand and choose the job you want

Education is increasingly recognized as the most valuable investment we can make in Nigerian youth. At the highest level, the goal of that education is to improve lives. But are we fulfilling our obligation to invest in education that achieves that goal?

Does school prepare Nigerian youths for the real world?  The need for youth skill acquisition

Youth skill acquisition Most Nigerian youths will remain unemployed if they don't do this

Study hard and get good grades and you will find a high-paying job with great benefits……does this still hold water?

children spend years in an antiquated educational system, studying subjects they will never use, preparing for a world that no longer exists.

Today, the most dangerous advice you can give a child is Go to school, get good grades and look for a safe secure job, That is old advice, and it’s bad advice.

It’s bad advice because if you want your child to have success in life, they can’t play by the old set of rules. It’s just too risky.

This forms a perfect tripod stand for some grave concerns:

(1) Does a good education or good grades always translate into good jobs for young school leavers?

(2) What is the definition of a “good job”?

(3) Is getting a “good job” always the ultimate guarantee for a life filled with riches & wealth?

Skill-based education is the new rule. its time for Nigerian youths to  learn practical skills that solve real-world problem

Why Skills-Based Education?

Youth unemployment is perhaps the most pressing need of youth – 311 million young people are unemployed globally. Sub-Saharan Africa is a hotspot of youth unemployment – extreme youth bulge demographic dynamics (Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to have the world’s fastest population growth between now and 2050 and the highest youth population) are met with only slow growth in formal employment. According to the ILO, the proportion of the working-age population in paid employment in Sub-Saharan Africa is only 13.7% – the global average is more than double that.

Productive employment is a basic individual right since it not only provides a wage but also an expression of self-fulfillment and dignity advancing the global jobs agenda requires preparing and enabling people to acquire and succeed in jobs through skills development. Skill-based education improves functional and analytical ability and thereby opens up opportunities for individuals and also groups to achieve greater access to labor markets and livelihoods.

Nowadays skill-based education is becoming more important. Skill Based Education is the study of abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and the challenges of everyday life. “Education is more important but skill is most important”,

It is true that our young generation needs to be skilled in order to get employment. It is very much important to get skills and only then we can think of a bright future of a country. This generation of people need to be skilled rather than knowledge-based.

Many people are knowledgeable but if they are skilled as well, they can get employment and have a good life but if we only have the knowledge it’s useless without a skill to apply it. A student can get good knowledge by just reading but skill to apply the knowledge can only be achieved by practice. For example one of my friends has good knowledge on electric circuits but practically he cannot even put a fuse or a bulb. Education Should Be Skill Based

Unfortunately, most Nigerian universities only provide knowledge-based education

Like i said earlier, today, the most dangerous advice you can give a child is Go to school, get good grades and look for a safe secure job, That is old advice, and it’s bad advice. If you could see what is happening in Asia, Europe, South America, you would be as concerned as I am.”

It’s bad advice because if we want our children to have a financially secure future, they can’t play by the old set of rules. It’s just too risky.”

Why….

What happens when a corporation announces a downsizing?

People get laid off, Families are hurt. Unemployment goes up……..

Check very well, who are those that get laid off first in the 21st-century economy. THOSE THAT HAVE KNOWLEDGE-BASED EDUCATION

Here is a practical example… if a company wants to downsize, it cant start with the website designer/developer and cybersecurity officer who knows what he is doing or else everything will go wrong.

A friend of my that has been parading himself as a real estate agent, woke up in 2020 and discovered he does not have a job and its more painful as he does not have a practical skill but with two kids and a wife

Its your life, its your decision.
